In Their Shoes: Remy S

Q1: Who are you? Describe your work, life, and sport of choice. 

I’m Remy Sharoff. When I’m not studying for my Master's Degree in Strategic Human Resources, I’m working for the Walt Disney Company in Corporate HR. I’m also a huge advocate for Diversity & Inclusion topics, especially LGBTQ issues. I live in Celebration, Florida with my fiancé, an ICU Nurse, along with our two cats. 

Q2: What is your sport of choice? How did you get started with it? Do you compete in races, if so what's your favorite distance? 

In grade school, I was a Speed Skater and almost made the Olympic Trials. While I wish I could return to skating, there are few ice rinks where I live. So when I moved to Florida, I took up half marathon running and triathlons. My favorite is the Olympic triathlon distance, Right now, I’m training up for any half and full Ironman and a Ragnar Trail run. 

Q3: What is your driving force behind your sport? 

Triathlons have been part self-care, part representation. During a really hard breakup, while I started my transition to female, I needed a reason to keep going. Can’t cry in bed, I have five miles to run or 1600m to swim today. Pushing myself towards my goal. 

Regarding representation, there are few Transgender Triathletes. No professional level. So I see my role is to normalize gender identity issues. 

Q4: What are three words that people use to describe you? 

Thoughtful, organized & empathetic 

Q5: What is your favorite thing to listen to while working out (music, podcast, audiobook, etc)...or do you prefer to go without headphones? 

Depends on my mood. Mostly podcasts, unless I’m using Zwift. 

Q6: What is your favorite meal or recipe? 

I’m simple, I love pizza. I’ll make the dough & sauce from scratch or order in from my favorite local small business.

Q7: Name a book you recommend to all your friends? 

Hard one! Vita: The Life of Vita Sackville-West. It’s a biography of Vita Sackville-West. She had such an interesting life. Trying to be authentic, while living properly as a woman in her station. 

Q8: What is your secret pleasure TV show to indulge in? 

Gossip Girl or the L Word! Shhh, don’t tell anyone.
