In Their Shoes: Michelle K
Q1: Who are you? Describe your work, life, and sport of choice.
Hello, my name is Michelle Kennemer! I live in the Dallas Metroplex with my husband Erik and 3 sweet pups. I am a music therapist - I work in special education using music to help students reach their academic, social, and life skills goals. I am a triathlete, but I enjoy running the most.
Q2: What is your sport of choice? How did you get started with it? Do you compete in races, if so what's your favorite distance?
Triathlon is my true love, but running was my first love. I ran my first 5K race on July 4, 2008 and I was hooked! I ran my first half marathon the following November and I thought that I would be good with running half marathons, but in 2011 I ran my first marathon. I also got a bike and enjoyed cycling, but had no interest in swimming….I think you know how this story goes. Four half Ironmans and 3 full Ironman triathlons later here I am. I also tried my hand at ultra running in early 2020. Half Ironman triathlons are my favorite distance, but I’m always up for a good challenge no matter the distance.
Q3: What is your driving force behind your sport?
I love the challenge - always working to improve myself. Running is also a great time for me to work through my thoughts and just process life. I am also fortunate to belong to a wonderful community of athletes who are also close friends. What is more fun than riding your bike or running the trails with your people?
Q4: What are three words that people use to describe you?
Consistent, stubborn, optimistic
Q5: What is your favorite thing to listen to while working out (music, podcast, audiobook, etc)...or do you prefer to go without headphones?
I never listen to anything while running! Because I am a musician in my day job, I appreciate the quiet time so much. I love to hear the world around me.
Q6: What is your favorite meal or recipe?
Being a Texas girl, I love my chips & salsa and Tex-Mex!
Q7: Name a book you recommend to all your friends?
A friend of mine wrote a wonderful book called You Cannot Mess This Up. Her name is Amy Weinland Daughters and the book is a great read. I always tell everyone about it!
Q8: What is your secret pleasure TV show to indulge in?
I’m a diehard sports fan - I’m a huge fan of all of the Dallas teams and I probably waste too much time watching Cowboys games on Sundays.
Q9: Last question - what are your favorite workout shoes?
I’m a Brooks girl - Glycerin and Launch
