In Their Shoes: KC Metz
Q1: Who are you? Describe your work, life, and sport of choice.
My name is KC Metz (short for Kathryn Claire) and I live in Northern Westchester, NY with my husband and our two sons, ages 7 and 9. I am currently home 24/7 (literally) overseeing my children’s fully remote learning, and trying not to step on a kitten (we just adopted 2!).
My sport of choice is running, and I also absolutely love barre and yoga...but I haven’t done either since the pandemic began. I have also really grown to love hiking and spending much more time outdoors with my family.
Q2: What is your sport of choice? How did you get started with it? Do you compete in races, if so what's your favorite distance?
I stumbled upon running in 2015, at the time both my 2 year old and a 4 year old had just entered pre-school, and I finally had more than 10 minute of freetime to myself. I went for a walk, it turned into a run, and the rest is history. I quickly found that running allowed me to unwind in a way that nothing else ever had, and that instead of coming home depleted, I came home energized and ready to be a better mom and wife!
I have run countless 5k races, several 10k races, 19 half-marathons, and 3 NYC marathons - I don’t compete with anyone but myself during a race; my favorite racing distance is most definitely the half-marathon. I cannot wait for the worst of this pandemic to be behind us, and for racing (and all that comes with it) to return to us all!!
Q3: What is your driving force behind your sport?
Without a doubt the driving force behind my running is the feeling I have before, during, and most importantly after a run. I often chuckle to myself as I lace up and yawn in the morning...knowing I am about to exhaust my body more, but wake up my heart and soul!
Q4: What are three words that people use to describe you?
Compassionate, positive, and inspiring
Q5: What is your favorite thing to listen to while working out (music, podcast, audiobook, etc)...or do you prefer to go without headphones?
When I am racing, I need all the motivational music I can get my hands on...except during the marathon (there I run, and just take it all in!). During long solo runs, or runs where I’m not pushing myself I really enjoy podcasts...especially running based and crime series.
Q6: What is your favorite meal or recipe?
Favorite meal - PIZZA (especially because I don’t have to cook it); however, if I am cooking our family favorite is turkey taco night.
Q7: Name a book you recommend to all your friends?
I would absolutely recommend reading Glennon Doyle’s UNTAMED…to anyone, and everyone! It is a wealth of inspiration, authenticity, and power!
Q8: What is your secret pleasure TV show to indulge in?
There is no secret about it, I absolutely love Schitt’s Creek, I could watch Friends and Sex and The City forever, and I just discovered Ted Lasso.
Q9: Last question - what are your favorite workout shoes?
Right now I am really digging my Brooks Transcend and my Hoka Bondhi’s. It’s funny but each year after I have finished my fall marathon, it’s as if my shoes say “I have served my purpose...next” and I cycle into a new option.
Hey, That’s our daughter ! So proud, we love you, Mom & Dad
