In Their Shoes: Kat T
Q1: Who are you? Describe your work, life, and sport of choice.
My name is Kat, I am the mother of 2 college kids and an Emergency Department/Occupational health nurse. I have a dog, one bunny and a lizard. I started running as an adult, I ran my first 5k as a 40th birthday gift to myself. I was a walker, and had major hip surgery at 38. My ortho cleared me to run, so I figured I should start running. Running has given me the best outlet and introduced me to some of my best friends. Running was hard for me during pandemic, I am a nurse with 2 jobs and I worked A LOT. I am back at it now, and being away from it has made me want it more.
Q2: What is your sport of choice? How did you get started with it? Do you compete in races, if so what's your favorite distance?
I wasn’t a traditional athlete growing up, I was a surfer/bodyboarder/skier as a kid. I was athletic, but not really focused or trained in any one sport. I was a lifeguard in college and loved to swim, but never competed. I am still not competitive, I am not fast, so finishing races feels like a big accomplishment to me.
Q3: What is your driving force behind your sport?
I am the only one in my family who runs. It seemed like a good way to get in shape as I got older. My kids played lots of competitive sports, and I could run while they were in school, or at their games/practices. Once I started running, I was encouraged to go further and try harder. Running has been very good to me and it keeps me in love with the sport. It is also not easy for me, so when I am running, I can only concentrate on running, it’s my time to rest my brain and just go.
Q4: What are three words that people use to describe you?
Intense, driven, reliable
Q5: What is your favorite thing to listen to while working out (music, podcast, audiobook, etc)...or do you prefer to go without headphones?
I like to listen to music, rock or pop, and disco! I don’t always run with music anymore, and that is also freeing. But when I need a little boost, tunes are the way to keep me going.
Q6: What is your favorite meal or recipe?
I love all food, especially Greek food, given my choice, I’ll pick ethnic food any day.
Q7: Name a book you recommend to all your friends?
I love romance novels, I prefer reading cute books to watching TV. I LOVE The Happy Ever After Playlist, it was delightful.
Q8: What is your secret pleasure TV show to indulge in?
If my kids ask me to watch any of the MCU shows, I can’t say no.
Q9: Last question - what are your favorite workout shoes?
I only wear Hoka, I love the Bondi, but I enjoy the Clifton and even got a pair of the Clifton Edge.
