In Their Shoes: Annette A

Q1: Who are you? Describe your work, life, and sport of choice.

I am Annette Aho! I work as a project manager for a healthcare tech company in Pittsburgh. I spend lots of time training for races ranging from the 5k to the marathon. When I am not training and racing, you can find me adventuring in my own city or finding a new one to explore.

Q2: What is your sport of choice? How did you get started with it? Do you compete in races, if so what's your favorite distance?

I have been a competitive runner for over 10 years! As a kid growing up in Sacramento, California I was blessed with a long and beautiful paved bike trail that I grew up training on. My miles from middle and high school eventually led me to Southwestern Pennsylvania where I ran cross country and track (5k/10k) for Waynesburg University (D3). After graduating in 2015, I moved to Pittsburgh and was lucky to find a competitive racing team organized by the local Fleet Feet and New Balance stores. I immediately started training for road races and since then have competed in distances ranging from the mile to the marathon. My absolute favorite distance to race though, is the 10 mile!

Q3: What is your driving force behind your sport?

For me running has always been about internal reflection, overcoming obstacles, and continually pressing forward. My personal motto is “Always in Beta” which means to be in a state of constant improvement. I believe there is no finish line to what we can become.

Q4: What are three words that people use to describe you?

Competitive, efficient, joyful

Q5: What is your favorite thing to listen to while working out (music, podcast, audiobook, etc)...or do you prefer to go without headphones?

I enjoy listening to music during long runs or easy training days. During race stimulation or track workouts, I prefer to be headphone free.

Q6: What is your favorite meal or recipe?

I have been eating plant based (mostly pescatarian) for almost 10 years! My favorite recipes usually come from The Minimalist Baker. I love her Tuscan Kale Salad, and her one-pot curries and stews!

Q7: Name a book you recommend to all your friends?

Can’t Hurt Me, by David Goggins. The language in this book can be strong, but the messages in this book are timeliness. I often reference it before work presentations, big races, or when I simply need to remember that everything I need to succeed lies within me.

Q8: What is your secret pleasure TV show to indulge in?

Gilmore Girls, New Girl, and Grey’s Anatomy!

Q9: Last question - what are your favorite workout shoes?

Minimal shoes with a neutral drop work best for me. I love the New Balance Zante Pursuits for everyday training and marathons. For speed work on the road or track, I love the New Balance 1500’s!
